Mini split not cooling?

Why is my mini split not cooling? Here is the honest version: what you can safely check yourself in the next five minutes, what a technician usually finds when it is not that, and exactly what it costs to find out.

If this means no cooling in the house: A home with no cooling is treated as urgent and prioritized, often same-day. The emergency button on the booking page gets a callback within 60 seconds.

Check these first

  1. Pull the front cover down and wash the two mesh filters in the sink. A mini split with dirty filters stops cooling long before a furnace would.
  2. Remote on COOL, not DRY or FAN, and the temperature set below the room.
  3. A code blinking on the head: write it down. It tells the technician which half of the system is complaining before they arrive.
  4. If the head drips water, turn it off. The drain is blocked or the coil is iced, and both are a visit.

If one of these fixes it, you owe us nothing and we are glad. If not, the next part is what the visit is for.

What a technician usually finds

Not cooling. A mini split that runs and will not cool is checked for its charge and for the leak that took it: the outdoor unit's own abnormality check says so in that order. The head protects a coil that runs too cold by throttling the compressor, so a frosting coil, from low charge or a dirty filter, is a system that cools less and less.

Indoor fault. A head that stops and blinks is telling you which sensor it lost: two blinks is the coil or room thermistor open or shorted, and the unit will not run on a temperature it cannot read. Three blinks is the indoor fan motor not reporting its speed, and a fan that is not turning is a coil that freezes in cooling and overheats in heating.

Outdoor fault. Five blinks is the outdoor unit protecting its compressor: overcurrent or a failed start three times in the first minute, and the manual sends the technician to the inverter board and the compressor windings. A compressor that overheats or fails to start on a system that has run for years is usually short of refrigerant: the outdoor unit's own check is the charge, the stop valve and a leak.

These are the causes in the manufacturers' troubleshooting charts and the trade handbooks our technicians train on, in plain words. The visit proves which one it is with a meter before anything is replaced.

What keeps it from coming back

The indoor coil frosts when it runs too cold, and it runs too cold on a low charge or a dirty filter.

Four blinks is the indoor control board itself, and a board that cannot read its own memory is replaced, not reset.

What it costs to find out
