Breaker keeps tripping?

Why does my breaker keep tripping? Here is the honest version: what you can safely check yourself in the next five minutes, what a technician usually finds when it is not that, and exactly what it costs to find out.

Check these first

  1. Unplug what was running on that circuit, then reset the breaker once: fully off, then on. If it holds, you had too much on it. If it trips with nothing plugged in, leave it off and call.
  2. A dead outlet in a kitchen, bath, garage or outdoors is often a GFCI. Find the outlet with the two buttons and press RESET.
  3. A breaker that feels warm, hums, or smells is the breaker. Leave it off.
  4. Lights that dim every time the AC or the dryer starts are worth a visit before anything fails, not after.

If one of these fixes it, you owe us nothing and we are glad. If not, the next part is what the visit is for.

What a technician usually finds

Tripped breaker. A breaker that trips is protecting the circuit. Once is a load; a breaker that will not hold or feels warm is the breaker, and the panel it sits in is the same age. Loose lugs and tired breakers in the panel are what make a breaker let go, and a tune-up is where that is found.

Panel. A breaker that trips is doing its job. A panel that is full, warm, buzzing, or one of the old brands whose breakers do not trip is the job. We install Square D Homeline, and Square D warrants it for ten years from the day it goes in; our labor warranty rides on top. A new panel on an old service is a new box on old wire. The meter base, the service cable and the disconnect are the same age as the panel that failed, and the utility will not touch them.

Gfci. A GFI that will not reset has either worn out from years of tripping or is tripping on something real on its circuit, and the panel feeding it is the same age as the device. Loose lugs and tired breakers in the panel are what make devices downstream trip and fail, and a tune-up is where that is found.

These are the causes in the manufacturers' troubleshooting charts and the trade handbooks our technicians train on, in plain words. The visit proves which one it is with a meter before anything is replaced.

What keeps it from coming back

A whole-home surge protector at the panel takes the spike so the breakers and everything downstream do not.

A whole-home surge protector at the panel takes the spike so the boards in the furnace, the refrigerator and the televisions do not.
